Massmart/Walmart needed a solution to engage and train thousands of employees across stores in South Africa. Their goal was to ensure that employees not only understood corporate initiatives but could apply them in-store to improve customer experience.

The Challenge

Previous training methods were inconsistent, hard to scale, and lacked engagement. The company wanted a measurable, impactful approach to workforce development. 

Our Approach

Ideate developed a multi-channel employee engagement and communication strategy. Core elements included: 

● Tailored campaigns to reach employees across regions 

● Creative internal communication content to explain and reinforce corporate initiatives 

● Gamified activities and interactive approaches to increase participation and knowledge retention 


The Results 

● Thousands of employees trained across multiple regions. 10,689 voluntary sign-ups in the first 18 months. 

● 65% active users (55% male, 45% female). 

● 80,000+ employees signed up and are using the application to date. 

● Increased knowledge retention and application in-store 

● Streamlined internal communications around corporate initiatives 

● Set a benchmark for employee engagement in the retail sector
